How to Make a PNG Sticker (Border, Shadow & Glow Effects)

A sticker is just a PNG with a border and some effects โ€” but getting it right matters. Too thin a border and it disappears on dark backgrounds. Too thick and it looks cheap. Here's how to create stickers that look professional on any background.

What makes a good PNG sticker

  • Transparent background. The foundation. Without transparency, the sticker has a box around it that looks wrong on any background that isn't white.
  • White or colored border. The outline that separates the subject from the background. White works universally; colored borders work well for brand stickers.
  • Enough padding. Space between the image edge and the border. Prevents the border from clipping into fine details.
  • Shadow for depth. A subtle drop shadow makes the sticker feel three-dimensional and pop off the background.

Step 1: Start with a transparent PNG

If your image has a background, remove it first. Use PNGmaker's background remover at /remove-background โ€” the AI detects the subject and removes everything else in seconds. Download the result as a transparent PNG before opening the Sticker Maker. If your PNG already has a transparent background, you can skip this step.

Step 2: Choose border width

Border width is set as a percentage of the image width, so it scales correctly regardless of image size. The preview updates live as you adjust the slider.

  • 4โ€“8% is the sweet spot for most stickers. Visible on both light and dark backgrounds without looking chunky.
  • 2โ€“3% for subtle, minimal borders on clean illustrations.
  • 10%+ for bold, cartoon-style stickers with a thick comic-book outline.

Step 3: Border color

White is the universal choice โ€” it stays visible on any background, dark or light, and it is the standard for Telegram and WhatsApp stickers. Use a colored border when the sticker is part of a branded set (match your brand's primary color) or when you want a specific aesthetic like a black outline for comic-style art.

Drop shadow vs inner shadow

  • Drop shadow. Appears behind and below the sticker shape. Adds realistic depth โ€” looks like the sticker is slightly lifted off the background. Most stickers benefit from a subtle drop shadow.
  • Inner shadow. Appears inside the sticker shape, adding dimension within the subject. Gives a slightly embossed or inset look. Less common, but effective for certain illustration styles.

Glow effect

The glow effect adds a soft colored halo around the sticker โ€” similar to a drop shadow but using a saturated color instead of a dark tone. Works best for neon, cyberpunk, and vibrant illustration styles. Combine a cyan or magenta glow with a dark background for an electric, eye-catching look.

Padding

Padding adds space between the image content and the border. This is important when the subject has detailed edges โ€” hair, fur, thin outlines โ€” that would otherwise get clipped by the border. A padding of 2โ€“4% of the image width is usually enough. If you notice the border touching the subject's edges in the preview, increase padding until there is visible breathing room.

Output tips

The result is always a PNG with transparency. The border, shadow, and glow are all composited onto a transparent canvas โ€” so the sticker looks natural on any background.

  • Telegram: resize to 512ร—512px after creating the sticker (use PNG Resizer).
  • WhatsApp: upload the transparent PNG directly โ€” WhatsApp handles sizing.
  • Canva, Figma, iMessage: all accept transparent PNGs natively.
